Collagen is the scaffolding of our bodies, famous for healing wounds. But it is notoriously fussy to work with outside the body. Now, researchers are pairing it with a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent, or NADES—a green, sustainable liquid made from citric acid and xylitol. The idea? Combine collagen's healing power with NADES's proven antibacterial potential.

The team put this duo through its paces using spectroscopy, calorimetry, and viscosity tests. They found that collagen's behavior in the solvent is a delicate dance. In undiluted NADES, both telocollagen and atelocollagen started to unfold—a sign of stress. But when the NADES was heavily diluted with water, the collagen remained as stable as it does in traditional acetic acid solutions, suggesting the solvent's protective network stays intact.

This is a first: no one has ever mapped how an extracellular matrix protein like collagen behaves inside a NADES. The implications are practical. A system that dissolves collagen without destroying its structure could become a real excipient—an inactive ingredient with active benefits—in future wound-care products.
