The processing industry generates a staggering 110 to 120 million tonnes of waste annually, burdening landfills and threatening ecosystems and human health. Yet, hidden within this waste lies a treasure trove of bioactive compounds—natural chemicals with antioxidant, anticancer, antimutagenic, and antiplatelet properties. These compounds hold immense economic value, waiting to be unlocked. Innovative biotechnological approaches are now turning this environmental problem into a sustainable opportunity. By recycling citrus waste, we can produce valuable bio-based products, from nutraceuticals to biofuels. This review explores how cutting-edge methods are transforming waste into wealth, reducing pollution while creating a circular economy.
