Affordable production of antioxidant aqueous solutions by hydrodynamic cavitation processing of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) needles

Conifer extracts are treasure troves of bioactive compounds, prized in nutraceutics, cosmetics, pharmacology, and even food preservation. But their journey from forest to factory has been rocky: extraction methods are complex, properties vary, and synthetic chemicals often crash the party. Enter hydrodynamic cavitation—a technique that uses vapor bubbles in liquid to break cell walls, releasing valuable compounds without harmful solvents. In this study, researchers applied controlled hydrodynamic cavitation to silver fir needles for the first time, producing aqueous solutions with enhanced antioxidant activity. The results were striking: the antioxidant levels matched or even surpassed those of reference substances, pure extracts, and other water-based products. This means we can create solvent-free, bioactive-rich solutions from a waste raw material—cheaply and efficiently. The implications are huge: from sustainable cosmetics to functional beverages, silver fir needles could become a green goldmine.
