Food waste is a growing problem, but it's also a goldmine of hidden potential. Scientists are now turning to almond hulls, an abundant agricultural byproduct, and discovering they pack a powerful antimicrobial punch. For the first time, researchers tested almond hull extract (AHE) against two notorious bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli—both capable of forming resilient biofilms that resist conventional treatments.
The extract was obtained using an eco-friendly, ultrasound-assisted method, then characterized with advanced techniques like HPLC-MS and NMR. The key players? Polyphenols, especially flavonoids and phenolic acids. These compounds showed significant antimicrobial activity against free-floating (planktonic) bacteria, and more impressively, they inhibited bacterial adhesion and even helped dismantle mature biofilms.
Crucially, the extract proved non-toxic to normal human skin cells (HDFa) in lab tests. This means AHE could be developed as a safe, sustainable antimicrobial agent. By turning waste into a weapon against infection, this research shines a light on how valorizing food byproducts can benefit both the environment and human health.
