An Eco-Friendly Extraction and Purification Approach for Obtaining Active Ingredients for Cosmetics from Two Marine Brown Seaweeds

Who knew that the secret to greener cosmetics might be hiding in brown seaweed? A new study reveals how two common seaweeds can be turned into powerful antioxidant ingredients—without harming the planet.

Brown seaweeds are making waves in the cosmetics industry, thanks to their rich stash of bioactive compounds, especially phlorotannins. But extracting these treasures often involves harsh chemicals and lots of energy. This study offers a greener path, using a sustainable approach to harvest active polyphenols from two Fucales species: Ascophyllum nodosum and Halidrys siliquosa.

The researchers used Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) to pull out the good stuff. Halidrys siliquosa came out on top, boasting 100.05 mg of phenolics per gram of dry weight—more than three times what Ascophyllum nodosum offered (29.51 mg/g). The magic temperature? 150°C, where both algae delivered high phenolic content and antioxidant activity close to positive controls, and just one extraction cycle was enough.

To get even purer fractions, the team applied Solid-phase Extraction (SPE). For A. nodosum, the phlorotannins concentrated in the ethanolic fraction, while H. siliquosa preferred a hydroethanolic one. The SPE process boosted phenolic concentration by 1.8-fold in A. nodosum and 2-fold in H. siliquosa, making the extracts more potent for cosmetic use.

This study isn't just about lab results—it's a step toward sustainable production of natural ingredients, tapping into Brittany's seaweed resources. By optimizing extraction and purification, we can create effective, eco-friendly cosmetics that respect both our skin and the ocean.
