Every year, tons of agroindustrial waste are discarded, yet these leftovers may hold hidden treasure. Brazilian researchers turned olive leaves, jaboticaba peels, araçá peels, and pecan nut shells into valuable extracts using green extraction—a method that avoids harsh chemicals. They tested four combinations of drying (convective or freeze-drying) and solvents (water or ethanol) to see how the process affects the recovery of bioactive compounds.
All samples displayed impressive antioxidant activity, but the pecan nut shell extract came out on top. Meanwhile, HPLC analysis revealed that olive leaves yielded the highest phenolic content, especially oleuropein—a compound known for its health benefits. The extracts also showed bactericidal effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, two notorious pathogens.
The choice of drying method and solvent proved crucial, highlighting that green extraction is not just eco-friendly but also effective. This study opens doors for industries to transform waste into functional ingredients, turning a problem into an opportunity.
