Chamuangone-enriched rice bran oil ameliorates neurodegeneration in haloperidol-induced Parkinsonian rat model via modulation of neuro-inflammatory mediators and suppression of oxidative stress markers
What if a compound from a Thai salad leaf could fight Parkinson's disease? A new study reveals how chamuangone, extracted from Garcinia cowa, shows promise in a rat model of the disorder.
In the quest for new Parkinson's treatments, researchers turned to an unexpected source: the leaves of Garcinia cowa, a plant used in Thai salads. From these leaves, they extracted chamuangone, a bioactive compound with potent antioxidant properties. By enriching rice bran oil with this compound, they created CERBO, containing 1.97 mg/mL of chamuangone, using a green extraction method.
The study tested CERBO in rats with haloperidol-induced Parkinson's-like symptoms. Rats received either a control, disease control, or CERBO treatment at doses of 2.5, 5, and 7.5 mg/kg, given orally before haloperidol injections for 21 days. After the treatment period, the researchers evaluated motor and non-motor symptoms, oxidative stress markers, and neuroinflammation.
Results showed that CERBO dose-dependently improved motor and non-motor symptoms in the treated rats. It also restored levels of antioxidant enzymes like catalase, and reduced markers of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. These findings suggest that chamuangone could be a natural therapeutic candidate for Parkinson's disease, though more research is needed.
