Characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity of phytochemicals from Aspilia africana obtained using green extraction techniques

Scientists are constantly searching for nature's hidden weapons against disease. A new study turns to Aspilia africana, a plant long used in traditional medicine, and asks a modern question: can we extract its power more effectively, and more sustainably, than ever before?
The researchers compared several green extraction methods—subcritical water at different temperatures and a simple heating-and-agitation approach—against the old-school ethanol soxhlet. The results were striking. The heating-and-agitation extracts boasted the highest levels of gallic acid, total phenolics, and flavonoids, and their antioxidant activity was nine times stronger than ethanol's, based on IC50 values.
When tested against cancer cells, the extracts showed selective power. Stomach cancer cells (AGS) were most vulnerable, lung cancer cells (A549) less so, and cervical cancer cells (HeLa) barely responded. The heating-and-agitation extract also triggered remarkable DNA breakage and nuclear condensation—hallmarks of apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
This study champions green chemistry: simple, safe, and effective methods that could unlock the medicinal potential of plants without harming the planet.
