Citrus fruits are a global staple, grown in over 140 countries and yielding more than 124.3 million metric tons annually. But this abundance comes at a cost: 50–60% of the fruit's mass—peel, pulp, and seeds—is typically discarded or fed to animals. This waste contributes to environmental pollution and economic losses, but it also presents a golden opportunity for a circular bioeconomy.

Beneath their unassuming exterior, citrus seeds are packed with valuable bioactive compounds: fatty acids, phenolic compounds, limonoids, dietary fibers, vitamins, and carotenoids. However, their chemical composition is not fixed—it varies with citrus variety, fruit maturity, environmental conditions, storage, and extraction methods. To unlock these treasures, scientists use both traditional and innovative 'green' extraction techniques.

The payoff is significant. Studies show citrus seed extracts exhibit antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities, making them safe and beneficial for use in functional foods, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. By valorizing this waste, we not only reduce environmental harm but also create economic value. The message is clear: citrus seeds are not trash—they are a resource waiting to be tapped.
