Comparative analysis of flavonoids extracted from Dendrobium chrysotoxum flowers by supercritical fluid extraction and ultrasonic cold extraction

What if the key to fighting liver cancer was hiding in your kitchen's lime peels? A new study reveals that the whole extract beats its pure compounds in killing cancer cells.

Lime peels—often tossed as waste—may hold a powerful secret. Researchers developed a green extraction method to produce a hesperidin-limonin-rich extract from Citrus aurantifolia peels. This time, they dug deeper into its metabolomics profile and tested its anti-cancer potential against liver cancer cells PLC/PRF/5.

Using LC-qTOF/MS and GC-HRMS, they identified over 80 compounds, including the well-known hesperidin and limonin. But the real surprise came from the bioassays. The extract's IC50 was 503 µg/mL, while pure hesperidin and limonin had IC50s of 165.6 and 188.1 µg/mL, respectively. Despite the higher IC50, the extract induced significantly more apoptosis than the pure compounds after 24 and 48 hours (p < 0.0001).

The extract also inhibited cancer cell invasion better than limonin alone, matching hesperidin's performance. What's more, the extract contained much lower amounts of hesperidin and limonin than their individual IC50 doses, yet still outperformed them. This suggests a synergistic effect among the many phytochemicals present.

In the end, the study highlights that nature's complexity often beats simplicity. The combination of limonin, hesperidin, and other compounds in the extract works together to deliver a stronger anti-cancer punch than any single molecule.
