Comparative analysis of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts obtained using different extraction techniques and their influence on Cowpea seed germination

What if the secret to better crop growth lies not in synthetic fertilizers, but in a humble leaf extract brewed with nothing but hot water? A new study reveals that Moringa leaf extracts can outperform a commercial biostimulant—sometimes by a landslide.

Moringa oleifera leaves are packed with cytokinins, antioxidants, and essential nutrients—nature's own growth tonic. But how you extract those compounds matters. Researchers compared seven different Moringa leaf extracts (MLEs) for their effect on cowpea seed germination, using tap water as a control. Among them were extracts made with Pressurised Hot Water Extraction (PHWE) at 25, 50, 100, and 150°C, plus a stirred batch, a blended method, and a commercial biostimulant.

The results were striking. Seeds treated with the control, 25°C, and 150°C extracts all hit 100% germination, while the commercial biostimulant managed only 30%. The 25°C extract produced the longest hypocotyls—13.2 cm—compared to just 2.1 cm for the commercial product. Secondary root emergence was highest (100%) with the control, 25°C, and stirred batch extracts, and the 50°C extract led to the greatest emergence of rudimentary leaves at 43%.

Across every measured parameter, the commercial biostimulant lagged behind. This study highlights that the extraction method dramatically influences the bioactivity of MLEs, and that simple, green techniques like PHWE could unlock the full potential of Moringa as a sustainable growth promoter. The future of agriculture might just be brewed, not manufactured.
