Cosmeceutical Potential of Major Tropical and Subtropical Fruit By‐Products for a Sustainable Revalorization
Tons of fruit waste could be the next big thing in skincare—if we stop throwing them away. Peel and seeds from tropical fruits are packed with bioactive compounds that fight aging, inflammation, and UV damage.
Every year, the world's growing appetite for tropical fruits leaves behind mountains of peels and seeds. But these by-products are not trash—they are treasure troves of bioactive compounds (BACs) with antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and photoprotective powers. This review dives into the most produced tropical fruits, their skin-loving chemistry, and how their discarded parts can become cosmeceutical heroes.
To unlock these compounds, scientists use both classic and cutting-edge extraction methods. Traditional techniques like Soxhlet, liquid-liquid extraction, and maceration sit alongside modern approaches such as supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted, microwave-assisted, and pressurized liquid extraction. After extraction, HPLC-MS or GC-MS analysis identifies the active ingredients.
Studies highlighted in the review show that seed and skin extracts can combat oxidative stress, hyperpigmentation, acne, aging, and UV radiation. By reimagining fruit waste under a circular bioeconomy, the cosmeceutical industry could gain sustainable, high-value ingredients for new formulations. The future of skincare might just be hiding in your compost bin.
