Developing translucent emulsions using sustainable NADES-based extracts

What if the key to clearer, greener cosmetics lies in plant-powered solvents that are as kind to your skin as they are to the planet?

Imagine a cosmetic that's not only translucent but also packed with plant power, all thanks to a sustainable twist on solvents. Researchers turned to Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES), made from lactic acid and glycerol in two ratios, to create translucent emulsions for cosmetics. These green solvents are non-toxic and compatible with living organisms, making them perfect for extracting bioactive compounds from six plants, including lavender, eucalyptus, and thyme.

The team used LC-MS to identify the extracted compounds and then mixed the NADES-extracts into a formulation with egg lecithin, ethanol, and olive oil. The resulting emulsions showed impressive bioactivity: they inhibited tyrosinase and elastase—enzymes linked to melanin regulation and skin aging—with IC50 values around 0.18 mg/mL and 0.23 mg/mL, respectively. The extracts also fought off Gram-negative bacteria, especially K. pneumoniae, and proved safe in larval tests, reducing melanization by 2-fold in G. mellonella larvae.

Skin cells tolerated the emulsions up to 5%, and transdermal tests showed 1–5% permeation, suggesting these TEs could deliver benefits without significant cellular damage. This study opens the door to more sustainable, effective cosmetic ingredients that harness nature's own chemistry.
