Differential extraction of phytochemicals from the multipurpose tree, Moringa oleifera, using green extraction solvents
What if the key to new medicines lies in a tree that can also purify water and repel pests—and we could extract it without a single drop of toxic solvent?
Moringa oleifera is not just any tree. In developing countries, it purifies water, acts as a biopesticide, and holds a treasure trove of bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical promise. But the standard way to unlock those compounds—using methanol-based solvents—leaves a dirty footprint on both the environment and human health. Green chemistry is stepping in to change that. In this study, researchers compared three eco-friendly extraction methods on dried moringa leaves: pressurized hot water, an aqueous two-phase system, and a natural deep eutectic solvent made from choline chloride and citric acid. Each extract was then analyzed using cutting-edge mass spectrometry. The results revealed a rich panel of phytochemicals, including polyphenolics like hydroxycinnamic acids and flavonoids, as well as glucosinolates. This work offers a promising foundation for the pharmaceutical industry, where extraction is a critical first step in drug discovery—now possible with solvents that are kind to both people and the planet.
