Direct green extraction of volatile aroma compounds using vegetable oils as solvents: Theoretical and experimental solubility study
Can we ditch harsh petroleum solvents for something as simple as cooking oil to capture nature's finest aromas? Scientists are putting vegetable oils to the test as green, eco-friendly solvents.
Traditional extraction of volatile aroma compounds often relies on petroleum-based solvents like dichloromethane. But a fresh scientific approach explores a much greener alternative: common vegetable oils. Researchers evaluated the dissolving power of ten different vegetable oils to extract six main volatile aroma compounds from basil.
To see what works, the team combined theoretical modeling using Hansen solubility parameters with real experimental extractions. They analyzed the results using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy alongside multivariate statistical techniques, grouping the oils by their distinct dissolving capabilities.
The findings reveal that solubility in enriched vegetable oils varies significantly. Crucially, vegetable oils proved themselves as viable, green alternatives for natural product extraction—with sunflower oil taking the crown for the best performance.
