Turbo-distillation is typically used in industry to extract essential oils from tough materials like wood, bark, and seeds. The researchers built a TC and compared it to the classic Clevenger hydrodistillation (HD) setup. They tested both on three hard-structured spices: star anise (Illicium verum), pink pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), and Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia).

The results were striking: TC extracted essential oils in just 30 minutes, while HD took 3 hours. The oils from both methods were nearly identical in yield, extraction kinetics, and aromatic profile. This means the TC not only saves time but also delivers quality—making it a perfect fit for hard matrices.
