Efficient extraction of flavonoids from Polygonatum sibiricum using a deep eutectic solvent as a green extraction solvent

The quest for eco-friendly science has found a powerful ally in deep eutectic solvents, which are rapidly stepping in to replace conventional organic solvents. Researchers put eight different variants of these green solvents to the test to extract flavonoids from Acanthopanax senticosus. Through careful optimization using response surface methodology—tweaking variables like ultrasonic power, water content, and temperature—a standout solvent emerged: a harmonious 1:1 blend of glycerol and levulinic acid.
Under finely tuned conditions involving ultrasound, this specialized green solvent delivered impressive results. It achieved a total flavonoid yield of 23.928 milligrams per gram, beating traditional ultrasonic-assisted ethanol extraction by a striking 40.7 percent.
To capture and purify the bounty, the team tested various macroporous resins, finding that AB-8 resin excelled with a recovery rate of 71.56 percent. Proving its sustainable credentials further, the deep eutectic solvent successfully demonstrated the ability to be reused twice, paving the way for a truly recyclable and environmentally friendly approach to natural product extraction.
