Forget harsh solvents—nature’s chemistry might be gentler than we think. Researchers compared two ways to extract bioactive compounds from glutinous rice husk: a traditional solvent method and an aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE) using cellulase enzymes. The AEE method, particularly with 0.5% cellulase (CE0.5), dramatically boosted the levels of vanillic and ferulic acid—two phenolic compounds known for their antioxidant power. These compounds were directly linked to the extract's superior ability to neutralize free radicals and inhibit collagenase, an enzyme that breaks down skin's structural support, leading to wrinkles. Even better, the AEE extracts were less irritating than solvent extracts, making them safer for cosmetic use. This green extraction method not only yields higher quality bioactives but also aligns with sustainable practices. The authors suggest CE0.5 could be a natural, effective ingredient for future anti-wrinkle products, turning agricultural waste into a skincare treasure.
