What if the key to unlocking nature's medicine cabinet lies in sound waves and green chemistry? A new study shows how ultrasound can efficiently extract health-boosting compounds from the medicinal plant Giloy.
Giloy, a revered medicinal plant, is packed with bioactive compounds that offer diverse health benefits. But getting those compounds out of the plant's stems and leaves has always been a challenge. Researchers turned to green technology—ultrasound—to do the job efficiently and sustainably. They optimized the extraction process using a clever statistical design, testing different solvent-to-solid ratios, sonication times, and solvent concentrations. The sweet spot: a 22.5:1 ratio, 40 minutes of sonication, and 75% solvent concentration. This yielded extracts with impressive antioxidant activity and high total phenolic content. The extracts also showed antibacterial power, inhibiting the growth of both S. aureus and E. coli. When the team screened the optimized extracts with LC/MS, they found a treasure trove of polyphenols, including catechin, quercetin, kaempferol, ellagic acid, hesperidin, and berberine. These findings suggest that ultrasonication is a powerful, green method for extracting bioactive chemicals from Giloy. The plant could become a functional ingredient in tasty, long-lasting foods and drinks.
