Extra Virgin Olive Oil-Based Formulations: A “Green” Strategy against Chlamydia trachomatis
Antibiotic resistance is creeping into the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide—but a kitchen staple might fight back.
For decades, we've leaned hard on antibiotics. Now, bacteria are pushing back, and Chlamydia trachomatis—the leading cause of bacterial STIs globally—is showing signs of resistance. But a new study offers a surprising twist: extra virgin olive oil, a staple of the Mediterranean diet, may hold a green solution.
Researchers tested a polyphenolic extract from EVOO, along with two of its key compounds, oleocanthal and oleacein, dissolved in a natural deep eutectic solvent (NaDES)—a biocompatible alternative to harsh chemicals. Using an in vitro infection model, they tracked how these olive oil polyphenols (OOPs) interfered with the chlamydial life cycle, from adhesion to invasion.
The results were striking. At a total polyphenol concentration of just 1.7 µg/mL, OOPs slashed the number of chlamydial inclusion-forming units by 93.53% (p < 0.0001). Electron microscopy revealed the mechanism: OOPs appear to damage the outer layers of chlamydial elementary bodies, compromising their structure and blocking their ability to infect host cells.
This isn't a cure yet—further studies are needed before clinical use. But as antibiotic resistance grows, this 'green' strategy offers a fresh, nature-inspired path forward in the fight against resistant pathogens.
