Quercetin, a powerful flavonoid, hides in the leaves of the mangkokan plant—but extracting it has always been a slow, solvent-hungry affair. What if microwaves and ionic liquids could change that?

For centuries, mangkokan leaves have been a traditional remedy for hair loss, wounds, and more. Modern science points to quercetin, a major flavonoid in the plant, as a key player—boasting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-biofilm properties. Yet the old extraction methods demand large volumes of organic solvents, long hours, and often yield disappointingly low amounts of the compound.

Enter ionic liquid-based microwave-assisted extraction (IL-MAE). This innovative technique combines the heating power of microwaves with the eco-friendly nature of ionic liquids—salts that stay liquid at room temperature. The study tested five different ionic liquids, including [BMIM]Br and [BMIM]BF4, to pull quercetin from dried, ground mangkokan leaves. The goal: higher extraction efficiency in a fraction of the time, using far less solvent.
