The humble cork oak—*Quercus suber*—is a treasure trove of bioactive compounds like phenolic acids, terpenoids, and tannins, boasting impressive antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging activities. To tap into these benefits without harming the planet, scientists have turned to natural deep eutectic solvents, or NADES. By combining everyday natural compounds such as lactic acid, glycerol, ethylene glycol, sodium citrate, and sodium lactate, researchers engineered safe, biocompatible, and low-cost liquid mixtures tailored for green extraction.

The results speak for themselves. These smart solvents actually outperformed harsh traditional chemicals like dioxane, delivering higher extraction yields. The magic behind the process depends on physical-chemical tuning—such as pH, polarity, viscosity, and density—alongside the chosen extraction method.

Chemistry dictates the harvest: acidic NADES made from lactic acid, glycerol, or sodium citrate excelled at pulling out aromatic compounds, terpenoids, and fatty acids. Meanwhile, basic mixtures rich in sodium lactate and polyols leaned toward capturing low molecular weight polar compounds.
