Green extraction of hemp seeds cake (Cannabis sativa L.) with 2-methyloxolane: A response surface optimisation study

What if the key to greener oil extraction was hiding in a bio-based solvent that can replace toxic hexane? This study shows how 2-methyloxolane, a renewable alternative, efficiently extracts hemp seed oil from cake.

Hemp seeds are nutritional powerhouses, packed with 25–35% lipids and 20–25% easily digestible proteins. But getting that precious oil out usually relies on hexane, a petroleum-based solvent that's effective yet far from green. Scientists are now turning to 2-methyloxolane (2-MeOx), a bio-based solvent, as a cleaner substitute.

In this study, researchers optimized the extraction of hemp seed oil from cake using 2-MeOx, applying response surface methodology to find the best conditions. The goal: maximize oil yield while keeping the process sustainable. Results show that 2-MeOx performs on par with hexane, offering a viable eco-friendly alternative.

The implications go beyond hemp. This work supports the shift toward greener solvents in food processing, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. For the oilseed industry, 2-MeOx could be a game-changer—sustainable without sacrificing efficiency.
