Green extraction techniques for obtaining bioactive compounds from mandarin peel (Citrus unshiu var. Kuno): Phytochemical analysis and process optimization

What happens when we turn leftover citrus fruit into a treasure trove of valuable compounds using nothing but green technology? Scientists are unlocking the hidden chemical wealth of mandarin peel waste.

Every year, citrus processing leaves behind mountains of waste. But innovative green extraction techniques can turn this problem into an opportunity. Researchers recently investigated how to efficiently utilize and valorize mandarin peel using a smart, multi-step approach.

First, supercritical carbon dioxide extraction captured volatile compounds at different pressures. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that limonene reigned as the dominant volatile component, leaping from 13.16% at 100 bar up to 30.65% at 300 bar.

Next, the leftover peel underwent subcritical water extraction across a wide temperature range, varying solvent ratios and short time periods to extract precious bioflavonoids. High-performance liquid chromatography identified hesperidin as the most abundant flavanone, alongside other polyphenols and thermal degradation by-products like chlorogenic acid and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural at higher temperatures. Finally, spectrophotometric methods measured total phenolic content and antiradical activity, while response surface methodology expertly optimized the entire green process.
