Scientists have long struggled to measure the environmental impact of extracting natural products. The Green Extraction Tree (GET) offers a fresh solution: a visual tool that assesses the entire process, from samples and solvents to energy use and waste. It combines the 10 principles of green sample preparation with the 6 principles of green extraction, covering every step from start to finish.
The GET uses a tree-shaped pictogram with three color markers—green, yellow, and red—to indicate low, medium, or high environmental impact. For quantitative comparison, these colors are assigned values of 2, 1, and 0, allowing researchers to score and compare different methods. The tool is available as an open-access toolkit that generates the pictogram automatically.
In case studies with five different extraction methods, GET successfully identified differences in greenness and highlighted which steps needed improvement. Compared to other green assessment tools, GET offers a unique perspective and is better suited for natural product extraction. It's a simple, intuitive way to make labs greener, one tree at a time.
