Saw palmetto, a medicinal plant renowned for treating urological disorders, leaves behind tons of fruit residues after pharmaceutical extraction. First, they used supercritical CO2, a green solvent, to extract residual fatty acids and polyprenols from the dry biomass. The yield was 1.2%, with polyprenols making up 1.6% of the extract. These unsaturated isoprenoid alcohols could have promising biomedical applications.
Then, they switched to subcritical water, heating it up to 180°C to pull out polar compounds. The higher the temperature, the higher the yield—showing that heat can unlock hidden potential in waste. This two-step process turns trash into treasure, aligning perfectly with circular economy goals.
The study proves that industrial medicinal residues aren't useless; they're an untapped resource. With green chemistry, we can valorize what was once thrown away, paving the way for sustainable production of bioactive ingredients.
