Researchers developed a green extraction method using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with a water-ethanol mixture. They optimized the process using response surface methodology, testing how ethanol concentration, extraction time, and microwave power affect the yield of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity.
The sweet spot? A 30% ethanol solution, 120 seconds of irradiation, and 670 watts of power. This produced an extract rich in flavonoids, fatty acids, and anacardic acids—compounds that can enhance the plastic's performance.
When blended into PLA/PBAT, this walnut shell extract could confer antioxidant properties and improve material performance, all while keeping the process green and cost-effective. A win for science, agriculture, and the planet.
