Hura crepitans, a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, has a split personality: toxic on one side, yet packed with polyphenols that could benefit health. This study dove into that paradox, using green extraction methods that varied solvent, temperature, and time. The goal? To see how these choices shape the plant's phytochemical profile and biological activity.

The results were striking: aqueous extracts showed superior antioxidant activity in spectrophotometric tests and were cytoprotective to HepG2 cells, a common liver cell model. Using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, the team identified the secondary metabolites behind these effects, confirming that solvent, duration, and temperature indeed tweaked polyphenol extraction.

To push the potential further, the most promising extract was loaded into liposomes—tiny fat bubbles designed to improve cell interaction and boost antioxidant power.
