Integrated sonication-assisted deep eutectic solvent for extraction of antibacterial compounds from cacao shells

Cacao shells, a massive waste of the chocolate industry, might just be nature's hidden antibiotic factory—if we extract them the right way.

Every chocolate bar leaves behind a mountain of cacao shells—about 80% of the cacao fruit's biomass. Usually tossed aside, this waste can become a breeding ground for pests. But inside those shells lies a treasure: bioactive compounds with antibacterial powers. The challenge? Getting them out without harming the planet.

Enter green chemistry. Researchers combined sonication with a deep eutectic solvent made from choline chloride and lactic acid. This eco-friendly duo gently pulls out phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Using a Box–Behnken design, they optimized conditions to 80°C, a 1:10 solid-to-solvent ratio, and 62.65% DES concentration. The result? Impressive yields: 4.94 g GAE/g for total phenolics and 5.97 g RE/g for flavonoids.

But the proof is in the performance. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of phenolic functional groups. And the extract showed real antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus—two common, troublesome bacteria. This isn't just lab trivia; it's a step toward turning waste into a weapon against infection.
