What if a weed could help save your heart? A traditional Chinese plant, Polygonum cuspidatum, hides a molecule that fights cardiovascular disease—and scientists just found a greener way to get it out.

Deep inside a plant long used in traditional medicine lies resveratrol—a compound that helps regulate fat metabolism, keep platelets from clumping, and shield against heart disease. But getting it out of the plant has always been messy: old methods are inefficient and rely on toxic solvents.

Enter natural deep eutectic solvents, or NADES—a new class of green solvents made from simple, natural ingredients. Researchers mixed betaine and DL-malic acid in a 1:4 ratio with 50% water, then paired it with ultrasound to break open the plant cells. The result? A record-breaking yield of 33.12 mg/g (by UV-Vis) and 2.95 mg/g (by HPLC)—far better than conventional techniques.

But the magic didn't stop at extraction. The resulting extract showed strong antioxidant activity, mopping up free radicals like ABTS, DPPH, and hydroxyl radicals. That means the extract isn't just pure—it's also biologically potent.

This ultrasound-NADES combo is not only efficient but eco-friendly, offering a cleaner path to resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum. For anyone who cares about green chemistry or heart health, this is a win-win.
