NADES-Based Cork Extractives as Green Ingredients for Cosmetics and Textiles
Could the humble cork from a wine bottle hold the secret to greener cosmetics and smarter textiles? New research says yes—thanks to nature's own solvents.
Cork isn't just for wine bottles anymore. Scientists have unlocked its hidden powers using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES)—eco-friendly liquids made from compounds like lactic acid and glycerol. These solvents gently extract antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial compounds from cork powder, turning waste into wonder ingredients.
In this study, three different NADES-based cork extracts were added to two commercial cosmetic creams. The results were striking: antioxidant activity jumped by 90%, while low concentrations (5–10 mg/mL) showed no harm to skin cells. The extracts also kept the creams' texture, smell, and pH intact—proving they can be dropped straight into existing products.
But the magic doesn't stop at skincare. Cotton fabrics dyed with these extracts gained powerful antioxidant (78% reduction in free radicals) and antibacterial properties, with inhibition zones of 12–15 mm. This means future textiles could protect against microbes while being colored naturally.
This green approach offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic additives and dyes, turning a common byproduct into a multifunctional ingredient for two major industries.
