What if a simple soak in water could unlock the secret to waking up dormant plants? Scientists have found that soaking African potato corms leaches out natural compounds that may be the key to breaking bud dormancy.

Dormancy is a survival strategy, but for the medicinal plant Hypoxis hemerocallidea, it’s also a bottleneck for propagation. Researchers discovered that soaking its corms in distilled water boosted cormlet development, hinting that something inhibitory was washing away. Using 600 MHz 1H-NMR spectroscopy, they identified four culprits: choline, succinate, propylene glycol, and lactose. These aren’t just random metabolites—they’re part of a class called Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES), which protect plant cells during stress. Each compound has the potential to inhibit bud growth, and their leaching during the first rain may shift the balance with dormancy-breaking hormones, triggering new growth. This finding opens a fresh frontier for sustainable propagation of this valuable medicinal plant, offering a natural way to enhance its cultivation.
