The biochemical industry is on a constant hunt for green solvents that balance low toxicity with affordability. While synthetic ionic liquids and traditional deep eutectic solvents show promise, their hurdles—ranging from potential toxicity to stubborn solid states at room temperature—limit their use. Enter a clever alternative: Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents, or NADES.

Composed entirely of natural compounds, NADES bring sustainability, biodegradability, and favorable pharmaceutical toxicity profiles to the table. Scientists put these green mixtures to the test using safflower as a case study, as its aromatic pigments span a wide spectrum of polarities. By combining various NADES formulations with multivariate data analysis, the team discovered something remarkable.

These natural solvents outperformed conventional extraction methods, successfully capturing both polar and less-polar metabolites. Water content emerged as the master dial, having the single biggest impact on the yield of phenolic compounds. Ultimately, major phenolic compounds were recovered with impressive yields ranging between 75% and 97%, cementing NADES as a powerhouse for green extraction.
