Natural deep eutectic liquids as green solvents in intensified extraction of bioactive compounds from fruit wastes
What if the key to unlocking nature's medicine cabinet lies in a humble ultrasonic bath and a green solvent? A new study shows how giloy, a medicinal plant, can be sustainably transformed into a powerhouse of bioactive compounds.
Giloy, a medicinal plant revered for its health benefits, is packed with bioactive compounds. But extracting these treasures often involves harsh chemicals. Now, researchers have turned to a greener approach: ultrasound-assisted extraction using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES). This eco-friendly method promises to unlock giloy's potential without harming the planet.
In this study, scientists optimized the extraction process for giloy stems and leaves. Using a statistical design, they fine-tuned the solvent-to-solid ratio, sonication time, and solvent concentration. The sweet spot: a ratio of 22.5:1, 40 minutes of ultrasound, and 75% solvent concentration. This yielded extracts with impressive antioxidant activity and total phenolic content.
But the benefits didn't stop there. The extracts also inhibited the growth of harmful bacteria like S. aureus and E. coli. LC/MS analysis revealed a wealth of polyphenols, including catechin, quercetin, and berberine. These findings suggest that giloy extracts could be used as functional ingredients in tasty, long-lasting food and drinks.
