Natural deep eutectic systems-based Ginkgo biloba extracts: A natural and sustainable solution for skin care

Ginkgo biloba, the oldest living tree species, has long been prized for its resilience and bioactive compounds. But traditional extraction methods often rely on harsh solvents. Now, scientists are turning to Natural Deep Eutectic Systems (NADES)—eco-friendly solvents made from natural ingredients—to unlock the tree's antioxidant power for skincare.
In this study, three NADES were tested. One blend, LA:Glc:W (5:1:3), outperformed even conventional solvents, yielding higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Chemical analysis revealed quinic acid and shikimic acid as the main compounds, with LA:Glc:W achieving the best extraction efficiency for quinic acid.
Safety and stability were also key. The extracts showed no toxicity to skin cells up to 50 mg/mL and successfully blocked reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by hydrogen peroxide and UV light. Meanwhile, another NADES formulation, Bet:Suc:Gly:W, remained stable for 360 days, keeping its antioxidant activity intact—perfect for long-term skincare products.
Green chemistry tools confirmed the process is sustainable, aligning with modern environmental standards. This isn't just a win for cosmetics; it opens doors for food and pharmaceutical applications too.
