Novel Technologies Assisted Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Orange Peels Waste

Orange peels are not just waste—they're a treasure trove of bioactive compounds, and new green technologies are unlocking their potential more efficiently than ever.

Citrus processing leaves behind mountains of peels, but these discarded skins hold valuable bioactive compounds. A recent study compared four extraction methods—conventional, microwave-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, and pulsed electric fields—to see which could best recover these compounds from orange peel waste. The researchers varied extraction time, ethanol concentration, and temperature, then used response surface methodology to optimize each process. Microwave-assisted extraction emerged as the star for total phenolic content, achieving 6.36 mg/g under specific conditions (50 kJ energy, 50% ethanol, 60 minutes)—about 12% more than conventional extraction. For flavonoids, ultrasound-assisted extraction won with 0.48 mg/g using 50% ethanol at 50°C for 90 minutes. Meanwhile, pulsed electric fields matched conventional yields for phenolics but boasted the highest antioxidant activity (1.12 mg/g) using only water at room temperature—a remarkable feat. The study confirms that ethanol concentration and extraction time significantly influence performance, highlighting the promise of these green technologies for sustainable valorization of citrus waste.
