Optimization of Extraction Parameters for Phenolics Recovery from Avocado Peels Using Ultrasound and Microwave Technologies
Did you know that avocado peels, often discarded, could be a treasure trove of antioxidants? With just the right tweak of ultrasound and microwave technology, we can unlock their full potential.
Avocado peels, about 20% of the fruit's weight, are usually thrown away. But they're packed with bioactive compounds. A recent study set out to optimize how we extract these valuable phenolics, using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). The researchers tweaked ethanol concentration, temperature, and time, measuring total antioxidant capacity and phenolic content, while identifying individual compounds via HPLC/MS.
Ethanol concentration proved to be the biggest game-changer. The sweet spot was 94.55% ethanol at moderate temperatures for short times: 45°C for 5 minutes with UAE, and 67°C for 12 minutes with MAE. Both methods worked well, but UAE had a clear edge—it extracted 15% more procyanidins, using less time and lower heat. That makes UAE more efficient and sustainable.
This research shows that turning avocado waste into a source of antioxidants is not just possible, but practical. By fine-tuning extraction, we can promote sustainability in the agri-food sector, turning trash into treasure.
