Optimization of Green Aqueous Extraction Process and Characteristics of Chromoplasts from Goji Berries (Lycium barbarum L.)

Forget harsh chemicals—natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are rewriting the rules of extraction. In this study, researchers optimized a green aqueous process to isolate chromoplasts from goji berries, achieving impressive efficiency. The method leverages NADES, which are biodegradable and non-toxic, making them a sustainable alternative to traditional solvents. The optimized conditions—liquid-solid ratio of 35.93 mL/g, temperature of 61.42°C, and time of 90.69 minutes—yielded a gossypol content seven times higher than ethanol extraction. This breakthrough not only enhances pigment recovery but also opens doors for eco-friendly applications in food and cosmetics. The chromoplasts retained their natural characteristics, showcasing the potential of NADES in high-value product development.
