Optimization of the Extraction of Bioactive Compounds and Metabolomic Profile of Licaria armeniaca

What if the key to unlocking nature's medicine cabinet lies in the ultrasonic hum of a lab? Scientists have optimized a green extraction method to reveal the hidden chemical arsenal of a tropical plant.

In the quest for new bioactive compounds, researchers turned to Licaria armeniaca, a plant whose tissues might hold potent chemicals. Using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), they fine-tuned the process by varying time, solid-liquid ratio, and ethanol concentration. A statistical design called central composite rotational design, paired with response surface methodology, helped them map the sweet spots for maximum antioxidant activity and phenolic content.

The results were promising: leaves and thin branches yielded predictive models with high accuracy (R² = 0.93 and 0.74, respectively). Thick branches resisted modeling, so the team simply picked the conditions that gave the best observed results. Then, they analyzed the extracts using advanced mass spectrometry and molecular networking.

The metabolomic profiles revealed a chemical treasure trove: leaves were rich in alkaloids (46.34%), amino acids and peptides (19.51%), and shikimate derivatives and phenylpropanoids (12.20%). Thin branches showed a similar pattern, while thick branches boasted fatty acids. More excitingly, the extracts showed significant cytotoxic activity against three cancer cell lines, with IC50 values below 50 µg/mL—a hint of potential therapeutic power.
