Optimizing Green Extraction Methods for Maximizing the Biological Potential of Dandelion, Milk Thistle, and Chamomile Seed Extracts
What if the seeds you throw away hold the key to fighting superbugs and cancer? A new study turns agri-waste into a treasure trove of bioactive compounds.
Forget the leaves and flowers—seeds from dandelion, milk thistle, and chamomile are the unsung heroes of the Asteraceae family. Researchers tested three green extraction methods—supercritical fluid, ultrasound, and Soxhlet—to unlock their hidden potential. Using supercritical CO2, they pulled up to 281 mg/g of oils from native seeds, while ethanol-based methods recovered an extra 142 mg/g from waste seeds.
Surprisingly, the waste seeds packed a stronger punch. Their extracts showed potent antioxidant activity, with IC50 values as low as 0.3 mg/mL, and fought off 32 microbial strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Phenolic compounds soared to 2126 mg GAE/g, alongside flavonoids and chlorophyll A. Even more striking, waste milk thistle extracts selectively targeted cancer cells, with a selectivity index of 1.9–2.7.
The oils from native seeds, though less bioactive, are perfect for food applications. Meanwhile, the small but mighty waste extracts could become pharmaceutical candidates. This isn't just waste—it's a pharmacy in disguise.
