Date palm pollen (DPP) is not just ancient folklore. A new review reveals it as a powerhouse of bioactives, with protein levels up to 39.8%, fatty acids up to 31.5%, and polyphenols up to 17.43 mg GAE/g. These compounds work together to support reproductive health, as evidenced by animal and human studies showing improved sperm quality, hormonal balance, and ovarian function.
Mechanistically, DPP acts on multiple fronts: it modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, enhances steroidogenesis, and activates antioxidant defenses. It also regulates nitric oxide and dopamine pathways while suppressing inflammation, engaging key signaling cascades like PI3K/Akt and Nrf2/ARE.
Technology is catching up. Green extraction methods like ultrasound-assisted extraction, encapsulation, and fermentation are boosting the stability and bioavailability of DPP's active compounds. Nanoemulsions and polymer-based carriers are promising delivery systems.
