Phytochemical profiling of essential oils isolated using hydrodistillation and microwave methods and characterization of some nutrients in Origanum compactum benth from central-northern Morocco
What if the key to a greener, more efficient essential oil extraction was hiding in your kitchen microwave? A new study on Origanum compactum from Morocco reveals just that.
In the sun-baked hills of central-northern Morocco grows Origanum compactum, a wild oregano with a chemical treasure chest. Researchers set out to compare two extraction methods—traditional hydrodistillation and modern microwave assistance—and found that the microwave method reigned supreme. It delivered a higher yield (7.41% vs. traditional methods) and identified more compounds (95.57% of the oil's composition), all while being faster and greener.
The plant itself proved to be a nutritional powerhouse. Dried flowering tops contained significant moisture (58.66%) and minerals (10.26%), with potassium leading the charge at 6.22 mg/gDM. The team also detected proteins, chlorophyll, and several amino acids, including two essential ones (isoleucine and leucine).
Chemical analysis by GC-MS revealed a clear chemical fingerprint: thymol and carvacrol dominated the oil, making up 78.81% and 14.84% of the microwave-extracted oil, respectively. Statistical analysis (principal component analysis) confirmed the two methods are distinctly different, with the microwave method offering a superior profile. This positions microwave extraction as a promising, eco-friendly alternative for capturing the full aromatic potential of this remarkable plant.
