What if the discarded rind of a mangosteen could hold the key to better heart health? This study turns food waste into a scientific goldmine.

Mangosteen, often called the 'queen of fruits,' hides a secret in its thick, purple rind—a rind we usually toss in the trash. But that so-called waste is packed with bioactive compounds called xanthones, known for their antioxidant and cardiometabolic benefits. Now, scientists have found a green way to unlock these treasures: pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE). No harsh chemicals, just water and heat—a win for both science and the environment.

Using this method, the team identified three key compounds: α-Mangostin, γ-Mangostin, and Gartanin. At 120°C, they hit the jackpot—highest concentrations and best antioxidant capacity. When endothelial cells (the cells lining our blood vessels) were treated with this extract for 48 hours, 408 genes changed their expression. The most striking change? A boost in 'steroid biosynthesis and metabolism,' likely through the AMPK signaling pathway—a master regulator of cellular energy.
