Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) Treatment Results in Growth Promotion, Main Flavonoids Extraction, and Phytochemical Profile Modulation of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi Roots
What if a gentle electric shock could make plants grow stronger while also yielding their precious medicinal compounds—without killing them?
Scientists have found a surprising way to boost both the growth and the medicinal value of a traditional Chinese herb, Scutellaria baicalensis. By applying a pulsed electric field (PEF) to the roots submerged in natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), they triggered reversible electroporation—tiny, temporary pores in cell membranes that let valuable compounds leak out while keeping the cells alive.
The team tested four different media, from choline chloride-based NADES to plain tap water. The best results came from a choline chloride/xylose mixture with 30% water, applied twice, yielding baicalin at 12.85 µg/mL, wogonin at 2.15 µg/mL, and wogonoside at 3.01 µg/mL. Remarkably, the wogonin levels matched those from traditional methanolic extraction, but here the plants survived—with at least 60% still growing after treatment.
Beyond extraction, the PEF-treated roots showed increased length and fresh mass, and their phytochemical profile shifted significantly. The method not only harvests key flavonoids but also stimulates the plant's own growth, offering a sustainable, dual-purpose approach to medicinal plant processing.
