Apple pomace—the leftover pulp, skin, and seeds after juicing—is usually tossed aside. But a new study shows it's a treasure trove of ursolic acid, a compound with promising bioactive properties. The challenge? Extracting it efficiently without harsh chemicals.
Enter microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Researchers optimized this green technique using response surface methodology, testing how extraction time, sample-to-solvent ratio, and ethanol concentration affect yield. Time proved the star player, with ethanol concentration and ratio following close behind.
The winning recipe? A quick 118-second microwave blast, a 1:30.86 solid-to-liquid ratio, and 82.23% ethanol. This combo predicted a 89.92% yield—and real experiments hit 88.87%, proving the model's reliability.
But they didn't stop there. A purification step with XAD-7 resin significantly boosted ursolic acid purity. The takeaway: MAE is fast, green, and effective, turning food waste into valuable bioactive extracts.
