Screening of Bioactive Compounds from Rosa canina L. Peel and Seed Herbal Dust Using Eco-Friendly Extraction Techniques

Who knew that the dust from your tea bag could be a goldmine of health-boosting compounds? Scientists have found a way to turn herbal tea waste into a source of powerful antioxidants.

The humble tea bag leaves behind a trail of waste—peel and seed dust from rosehip processing. But this 'dust' is far from useless. Researchers have discovered that it's packed with phenolic compounds, including gallic acid derivatives, ellagic acid, and flavonoids like quercetin. These are the same antioxidants that make berries and green tea famous for their health benefits.

To unlock these treasures, the team employed two green extraction techniques: ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with a sonotrode, and subcritical fluid extraction (SBFE). Both methods use eco-friendly solvents and conditions, aligning perfectly with the principles of sustainable chemistry. The extracts were then analyzed using advanced mass spectrometry and chromatography to identify and quantify the bioactive compounds.

Results were impressive. With SBFE, an ethanol-water mix (48:52) at 180°C yielded the highest total phenolic content: 3876.67 mg GAE/L from peel and 1648.57 mg GAE/L from seeds. UAE, using the same solvent mix for just 10 minutes, gave 2773.81 mg GAE/L for peel and 957.86 mg GAE/L for seeds. These numbers show that both methods are effective, with SBFE pulling out more phenolics overall.

This research turns a waste problem into a resource opportunity. By repurposing rosehip tea by-products, we can source natural bioactive compounds for nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals—reducing waste while adding value. A win-win for industry and the environment.
