Sequential extraction approach for sustainable recovery of various hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) bioactive compounds
Industrial hemp is more than just a crop—it's a treasure chest of bioactive compounds waiting to be unlocked. This study shows how green extraction techniques can turn one plant into a goldmine of health-promoting agents.
A clever sequential approach allowed the team to first extract lipid compounds, then reuse the remaining raffinate to isolate polyphenols. Cannabinoid content was measured in both plant material and SFE extracts. The results confirm hemp as an excellent source of terpenoids, cannabinoids, and polyphenolic antioxidants, with promising applications in dietary supplements and functional foods.
Key Points
- Three hemp varieties yielded terpenoids, cannabinoids, polyphenols
- Sequential SFE plus MAE maximizes raw material use
- Green techniques show strong antioxidant activity
