Subcritical water extraction for phytochemicals from vegetables and vegetable waste: A review of recent advances

Could a mangrove leaf extract be the next acne-fighting superhero? A new study says yes—if you mix it with the right sugar and acid.

Acne is a common skin problem, and the usual fix—antibiotics—is losing its punch as bacteria become resistant. But nature might have a plan B. Mangroves are packed with bioactive compounds, and scientists are now turning to them for a natural alternative. In a recent study, researchers used a special solvent called NADES, made from citric acid and glucose, to pull out antibacterial compounds from young and old leaves of Avicennia marina, a mangrove species. They tested four different ratios of acid to sugar, and the results were striking. The 4:1 ratio (P4) produced the largest clear zones in lab tests: 24.51 mm for young leaves and 37.38 mm for old leaves, both significantly better than the 1:1 ratio (P1). Even more, the team used molecular docking to show that key metabolites in the extracts bind tightly to proteins in Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria behind acne. This suggests the extracts aren't just killing bacteria—they're doing it in a targeted way. While more research is needed, this study highlights a promising, green path to acne treatment, turning a humble mangrove leaf into a potential skincare hero.
