For centuries, traditional herbal decoction (THD) has been the go-to method for preparing Chinese medicine. But a new study reveals that subcritical water extraction (SBWE) can dramatically boost the yield of active compounds from Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as danshen. By heating water under pressure, SBWE extracts five key pharmaceutical ingredients—including tanshinones and phenolic acids—with remarkable efficiency.
At 150°C, the amount of tanshinone I extracted was 370 times higher than with THD. However, hotter isn't always better: as extraction temperatures rose, the ability of the extracts to inhibit worm reproduction also increased, suggesting stronger bioactivity. In fact, SBWE extracts outperformed THD at all four tested temperatures, offering a more potent herbal remedy.
But the benefits go beyond potency. Unlike THD, which operates in an open system, SBWE is closed, preventing the loss of volatile compounds. It also eliminates toxic organic solvents, making it both environmentally friendly and safer for patients.
