Synergistic use of NADES and assisted extraction technologies for recovery and stabilization of bioactive compounds in Beta vulgaris L. peels
Beetroot peels are often thrown away, but they hide a treasure trove of health-boosting compounds—and a new green chemistry approach just made unlocking them easier than ever.
Every year, tons of beetroot peels end up as waste, despite being packed with antioxidants and other bioactive compounds. Now, scientists have found a way to turn this trash into treasure using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES)—a new class of green solvents that are sustainable and effective.
The team tested several NADES to extract valuable compounds from beetroot peels. One combination, betaine and glycerol, stood out: it delivered the highest extraction efficiency and produced extracts with superior antioxidant activity. The optimized conditions were mild—just 40°C with a 1:20 solid-to-liquid ratio—making the process energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
What's more, NADES didn't just help extract these compounds; it also kept them stable over time. This means the extract can be used as a liquid directly, without removing the solvent, which simplifies the process and reduces costs. The resulting extracts could find their way into foods, cosmetics, or nutraceuticals.
This study shines a light on the circular economy: by turning beetroot waste into a valuable source of natural antioxidants, we reduce waste and create value. NADES are proving to be a promising alternative to conventional solvents, paving the way for greener, more sustainable extraction technologies.
